Weekly ideas to stimulate reflection, inspire new possibilities and encourage new ways of doing and being.

1. Test the water

This week’s word is: Agenda

The word "agenda" refers to a structured plan or list of items to be discussed, addressed, or acted upon during a meeting, event, or period of time. The term originates from the Latin word agenda derived from the verb agere, meaning "to do" or "to act” and translates to “things to be done”.

What is your definition of agenda how do you relate to it? Discuss the question here

2. Experience the initial wave

To broaden your perspective, take a few minutes to read the following thoughts and notice what comes up for you.

I.

“The secret of your success is determined by your daily agenda”. John C. Maxwell

II.

“The quality of a meeting is directly proportional to the quality of its agenda”. Unknown

III.

The concept of an agenda in meetings has evolved over time to become a critical tool for organizing and structuring discussions. In ancient times, meetings, such as councils and assemblies, often relied on informal methods to guide discussions. Leaders would outline key topics or issues without a structured agenda. In 1876, the publication of Robert’s Rules of Order by Henry Martyn Robert marked a significant milestone. This manual provided a standardized set of procedures for conducting meetings and established the formal use of agendas to structure discussions, ensuring orderly decision-making.

3. Dive deep

While agendas are meant to be transparent and shared, there are times when they are hidden. To gain a deeper understanding and spark new discoveries, this week I invite you to reflect on the following question: What is your hidden agenda and why is it hidden?

4. Ride your radiant wave

Meetings play a crucial role in company culture, and hosting engaging, effective and meaningful meetings is a super valuable skill. Using a well-structured agenda can help streamline your meetings, inspire people participation, and increase team morale. This week I invite you to explore and implement innovative meeting agenda templates. Visit this website to get some inspiration and check out my favourite two agenda templates below.

  • The Dreamer — Build a pool of creative ideas (no restrictions or criticism!). Determining the viable creative concepts comes later as a result of the second and third thinking styles.

  • The Realist — Now, let’s think in a more logical planning style. How can we apply these ideas in reality?

  • The Critic — In this section of the meeting, the team provides a constructive critique for the ideas in order to find the weak points and solve them in the final solution.

  • Action Items — Document key decisions and next steps.
