Weekly ideas to stimulate reflection, inspire new possibilities and encourage new ways of doing and being.
1. Test the water
This week’s word is: Becoming
The concept of "becoming" typically refers to the process of developing or transforming into something different or more advanced. It implies a change from one state or condition to another, often involving growth, improvement, or evolution.
The word "becoming" derives from the Old English word "becuman", which means "to arrive, come to be".
What is your definition of becoming and how do you relate to it? Discuss the question here.
2. Experience the initial wave
To broaden your perspective, take a few minutes to read the following thoughts and notice what comes up for you.
I.
“Now I think it’s one of the most useless questions an adult can ask a child—What do you want to become when you grow up? As if growing up is finite. As if at some point you become something and that’s the end”. Michelle Obama
II.
“Maybe the journey isn’t so much about becoming anything. Maybe it’s about un-becoming everything that isn’t really you, so you can be who you were meant to be in the first place”. Paul Coelho
III.
Philosophically, "becoming" contrasts with "being", which denotes a constant state of existence. In essence, "becoming" emphasizes the dynamic aspect of existence, focusing on transitions, progress, and the journey toward a particular state or outcome.
3. Dive deep
To gain a deeper understanding and spark new discoveries, this week I invite you to reflect on the following questions:
What are the defining moments in your life that have contributed to who you are becoming?
How have your core values and beliefs evolved over time, and how do they inform your journey of becoming?
How do you balance the pursuit of becoming with acceptance and gratitude for who you are now?
4. Ride your radiant wave
This week, inspired by the wisdom of Paulo Coelho, I invite you to embark on a journey of unbecoming to become. Follow these steps to guide your transformation:
Pick an unhelpful way of being: Reflect on one specific behavior or approach that no longer serves your growth or interferes with becoming who you truly aspire to be.
Reflect and write: Once you have identified this way of being, write down in a piece of paper:
What advantages or comforts does this way of being provide? Why have these benefits been important to you in the past?
How does this way of being hinder your journey of becoming?
Explore an alternative way of being: Once you have identified the unhelpful way of being and its implications, consider an alternative approach or behavior that aligns with your vision of becoming who you truly are. Write down:
What new behavior, mindset, or approach can you adopt to support your personal growth and aspirations?
How will this alternative way of being contribute positively to your journey of becoming?
Commitment and action: Commit to implementing this alternative way of being throughout the week and reflect daily on your progress. At the end of the week, take time to reflect on your experiences, evaluate the impact of adopting a new way of being, adjust your approach as needed and continue to evolve into the person you want to become.
