1:11 Waves Blog 83: Curiosity

Weekly ideas to stimulate reflection, inspire new possibilities and encourage new ways of doing and being.

1. Test the water

This week’s word is: Curiosity

Curiosity is a a strong desire to know or learn something.

The word "curiosity" comes from the Latin word "curiositas," which means "inquisitiveness" or "eagerness to know." It’s derived from "curiosus," meaning "careful" or "eager to know," which itself comes from "cura," meaning "care" or "concern."

What is your definition of curiosity how do you relate to it? Discuss the question here

2. Experience the initial wave

To broaden your perspective, take a few minutes to read the following thoughts and notice what comes up for you.

I.

"I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious." Albert Einstein

II.

“Be less curious about people and more curious about ideas.” Marie Curie

III.

Curiosity is influenced by both nature and nurture. Research suggests that curiosity is about 50% innate and 50% shaped by our experiences, allowing great opportunity for growth and development throughout life. To build and exercise your curiosity muscle, try these six science-based recommendations:

  • Have fun and set aside time to experiment and explore

  • Adopt the student mindset and approach things with the eagerness to learn and grow

  • Surround yourself with curious people

  • Change your routine

  • Reflect and adapt

3. Dive deep

To gain a deeper understanding and spark new discoveries, this week I invite you to reflect on the following question:

  • When were the moments when you felt most curious?

  • What are the sources of your curiosity?

  • What kind of environments or conditions best support your curiosity?

  • In what ways has curiosity contributed to your personal growth?

4. Ride your radiant wave

The book Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is all about curiosity and how it shapes our experiences. The book shows how Alice’s insatiable curiosity leads her on a journey of self-discovery and growth where she explores new things, questions what she knows, and goes on surprising adventures. The first chapter of the book is titled “Down the Rabbit Hole,” and it captures the fascinating nature of rabbit holes. They symbolize winding, unpredictable paths that lead to surprising and unknown destinations. This week, I invite you to dive into your own rabbit hole. Whether it’s exploring a new interest, following a curious thought, or starting a project that excites you, embrace the journey with all its twists and turns. See where your curiosity will lead you!
